Law Firm Profile

Camden, Sumter, Lexington, Newberry, Orangeburg, Columbia, Aiken SC.

H. Patterson McWhirter was born and raised in Walterboro, South Carolina, and he has been practicing law in his home state ever since earning his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1973. After graduation, Mr. McWhirter formed Hunter & McWhirter, a general practice law firm focusing on personal injury law, with James Earl Hunter.

In 1977, Mr. McWhirter was appointed to be the Public Defender of Lexington County. This position was created to provide legal representation to individuals who could not afford to pay for a criminal defense attorney. Mr. McWhirter remained the Lexington County Public Defender for 14 years in a part-time capacity. During that time, he continued building his private law practice focusing on representing personal injury victims.

In 1986, Mr. McWhirter formed the firm McWhirter & Associates with a focus on fighting for the rights of personal injury victims. Cases handled by this law firm included workers' compensation, car accidents, medical malpractice, wrongful death, premises liability, product liability, and pharmaceutical injuries. By 1989, Garland Pearson McWhirter joined the firm as managing attorney, and Thomas P. Bellinger became an associate with the firm. Mr. Bellinger had initially worked with Mr. McWhirter as an Assistant Public Defender for Lexington County.

Over the last two decades, the firm has continued to expand throughout the state. In 1996, the name of the firm became McWhirter, Bellinger & Associates. Today, there are seven offices in seven counties throughout South Carolina. McWhirter, Bellinger & Associates has a staff of over 50 people including 11 attorneys. The firm continues to fight for the rights of injured victims, providing quality legal representation that has earned verdicts and settlements for thousands of clients.
