Pradaxa Claims Lawyer

Camden, Sumter, Lexington, Newberry, Orangeburg, Columbia, Aiken SC.

The attorneys at McWhirter, Bellinger & Associates are currently investigating claims on behalf of individuals who have suffered an injury due to severe bleeding after taking the blood thinner Pradaxa. Several lawsuits have already been filed against Boehringer Ingelheim, the manufacturer of Pradaxa. These lawsuits claim that Boehringer Ingelheim failed to adequately warn doctors and patients about the risk of severe bleeding associated with Pradaxa.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers are required to properly warn doctors and patients of all risks associated with the drugs they manufacture. When they fail to do so and you are injured as a result of taking the dangerous drug, you may be entitled to receive compensation for your damages. If you have suffered a serious injury associated with uncontrolled bleeding after taking Pradaxa, please call 800-694-0994 today to schedule a free consultation with our South Carolina pharmaceutical injury lawyers. We have more than 30 years of experience handling these complex claims, and we can help ensure you receive the compensation you deserve.

Dangers of Pradaxa

Pradaxa is commonly prescribed to prevent strokes in patients suffering from an irregular heartbeat condition called atrial fibrillation. The drug works by inhibiting the enzyme used for blood clotting. Unfortunately, this blood thinner also inhibits the formation of "good" blood clots which are necessary for your body to repair itself after an injury. Unlike other blood thinners such as Coumadin (warfarin), Pradaxa lacks an antidote to reverse these anticlotting effects. As a result, when Pradaxa patients suffer internal bleeding injuries, it may not be possible to get the bleeding under control in a reasonable amount of time to prevent serious injury or even death. Elderly patients and individuals with kidney problems are at the greatest risk of these uncontrollable bleeding injuries.

Internal bleeding injuries associated with Pradaxa can include:

  • Bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke)
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Excessive bleeding from trauma
  • Spontaneous internal bleeding

While other blood thinners may also cause internal bleeding injuries, reversing agents exist for these drugs which can help your body restart the blood clotting process quickly. The lack of a reversal agent for Pradaxa seems to be the primary reason the drug has such an elevated risk of injury or death after an internal bleeding event. Currently, more than 260 deaths have been reported in association to bleeding events in Pradaxa patients.
